Loblolly Pine

Southern Yellow Pine Pinus taeda Native

One of the fastest growing pines, four to five feet a year,  as it grows constantly from before last spring frost until last autumn frost as compared to most pines which have one spurt of growth and then stop. Now a major source of pine lumber, (often called Southern Yellow Pine), the Loblolly can live for over 200 years, reaching over 80 feet in height and 6 feet in diameter. Perhaps its most unusual trait is that it can grow in almost any type of soil.  Most plants require organic matter and an active biological community to germinate and grow.  The Loblolly will germinate and grow in pure subsoil well below any prior plant life, with zero organic matter and minimal biological life, almost the perfect reclamation tree. Will grow happily in wet areas as well as well drained soils
