A spectacular small tree or large bush when in flower which wafts strong fragrances a goodly distance, to hundreds of feet, to please almost everyone, not to mention that bees, hummingbirds and butterflies love it. How can we not as well? And as a small bonus, after it flowers the seed pods provide a dramatic metallic blue seed surrounded by bright purple-red calyxes which, from afar, many people mistake for a second flowering. What is there not to love about this tree? Nothing other than it does sucker, but these are easily pulled or mowed. Deer and other walking, flying and crawling critters avoid it. Hardy in zone 6b to 10. Fast grower, for most soils, the more sun, the more flowers. Blossoms in late July through August. Hardy from zone 2 to 9. Three months of pleasure! Similar in many ways to the Heptacodium trichotomum or Seven Son Flower.
The Royal Horticultural Society loves its cultivars and awarded 2 of them their Award of Garden Merit.
